SoftBank completes its $30 billion OpenAI investment with final payment

SoftBank says it has paid the final $10 billion tranche of its 2026 OpenAI commitment, bringing its cumulative investment to $64.6 billion.

Listen to this article

SoftBank Group says it completed a final $10 billion payment to OpenAI on October 1, finishing the $30 billion investment commitment it announced earlier this year. The transaction was made through SoftBank Vision Fund 2.

In its new disclosure, the Japanese investment group puts its cumulative investment in OpenAI at $64.6 billion and its ownership interest at approximately 13 percent. The announcement reports an executed transaction, making this a funding completion rather than another commitment awaiting payment.

The last payment in a scheduled investment

SoftBank had laid out a three payment schedule. Its April disclosure confirmed the first $10 billion investment on April 1 and identified July and October as the expected dates for the remaining payments.

The company then confirmed a second $10 billion payment on July 1. That notice retained October 1 as the planned date for the last tranche. Both earlier payments used borrowing under a bridge facility arranged in March.

Reading the disclosures together establishes the sequence. The October transaction completes a previously announced investment in installments. It should not be added to the earlier $30 billion commitment when calculating the amount of new capital promised under that agreement.

The financing also changes

SoftBank says proceeds from foreign currency senior notes announced on September 24 funded the latest payment. It also canceled $10 billion of unused capacity under its March bridge facility, effective September 30.

Following that cancellation and an earlier repayment, the company says the bridge facility has no outstanding borrowing or undrawn commitments. That statement concerns the bridge facility specifically. It does not mean that the senior notes used for the final payment have been repaid.

The central development is therefore straightforward. SoftBank reports that the scheduled capital has reached OpenAI and that the temporary bridge financing arrangement has been closed out. The cumulative investment and ownership figures describe SoftBank’s position after that completion.
