Hassabis takes an Alphabet role as Kavukcuoglu leads DeepMind

Alphabet just split DeepMind’s AGI brief from the daily grind of shipping Gemini. In a message to employees, Sundar Pichai said Demis Hassabis becomes Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet, while Koray Kavukcuoglu steps up as SVP of Google DeepMind reporting to Pichai. Hassabis keeps Isomorphic Labs. Kavukcuoglu keeps Chief AI Architect and inherits the operational stack that has to win the next model cycle.
This is not a soft title shuffle. Day-to-day GDM leadership moved.
What Pichai changed in the org chart
Pichai framed the move as doing two jobs at once: accelerate the full AI stack, and give someone room to shape AGI and science at Alphabet scale. Hassabis, he wrote, had been spending heavily on external engagement and on the “foothills of the singularity” framing he uses publicly. The chair-plus-chief-scientist role lets him put full attention on that strategic layer while advising Koray, Josh, and GDM teams across models and research.
Kavukcuoglu — already CTO of GDM and Chief AI Architect — becomes SVP of Google DeepMind. He oversees Gemini model development, Frontier AI research, and the Gemini app and developer teams. Reporting line: straight to Pichai. Product-and-model execution now sits under one 13-year DeepMind operator, not under a dual-hatted founder still running Isomorphic and the AGI narrative.
In the same note, Pichai also confirmed Jeff Dean’s exit after 27 years — a separate story inside the same leadership week.
Hassabis’s chief-scientist remit
Hassabis’s note is blunt. He wants time to focus on the big picture as AGI feels “close at hand,” and to influence what comes next. He hands over day-to-day operational responsibilities at GDM. He will work with Pichai on strategic and global AGI matters, advise Kavukcuoglu and the GDM leads from London’s Platform 37 offices, and lean harder into Isomorphic Labs — where he says health progress is rapid, including the cancer-cure framing he has repeated for years.
He is not vanishing from Gemini. He says the models are “in good hands with Koray and the leads, as they have been for a while,” and flags excitement about new models including Gemini 4. The structural point stands: operational accountability for the lab’s shipping engine now sits with Kavukcuoglu.
What Kavukcuoglu inherits operationally
Pichai’s inventory is the job description. Flash demand is high. A Cyber model is live. Gemma downloads have surpassed 900 million. The Gemini app sits above 950 million monthly users. Kavukcuoglu’s remit covers Gemini model development, frontier research, and the app plus developer surfaces — the commercial and research spine Alphabet uses to argue full-stack advantage.
His DeepMind résumé, as Pichai recounts it, includes starting the deep learning team and work on WaveNet and DQN. Hassabis calls him one of the world’s foremost AI experts and a mission champion from DeepMind’s early days. Translation: model roadmaps, research bets, and Gemini product cadence now clear through Kavukcuoglu under Pichai, with Hassabis as chair, adviser, and Alphabet-level scientist rather than daily ops lead.
Why the timing matters for Gemini
Alphabet is selling momentum — earnings strength across Search, YouTube, and Cloud, developer demand for Gemini, recent Gemini Robotics advances — while admitting it must keep moving fast on gaps. Elevating Kavukcuoglu mid-cycle bets that operational speed on Gemini 4 and the Flash/Cyber/Gemma line matters more right now than keeping the founder in the release war room.
Hassabis gets air cover for AGI strategy, science, and Isomorphic without owning every sprint. Kavukcuoglu gets the scoreboard: model quality, app growth, developer adoption. If Gemini slips, the reporting line makes accountability obvious. If it lands, Alphabet can claim the reorg put the right person at the right altitude. DeepMind’s dual mandate — ship products and shape AGI — now sits across two names instead of one overloaded title.
