Gemini reaches one billion monthly users as ChatGPT competition grows

Google’s Gemini app just crossed one billion monthly active users. ChatGPT got there first. The gap that used to look like a moat now looks like a photo finish.
What Pichai actually said
TechCrunch reports that CEO Sundar Pichai posted on X that the Gemini app recently passed 1 billion monthly active users and is one of Google’s fastest-growing products — the 14th Google product to hit that mark. The Verge goes further: Pichai called Gemini Google’s fastest-growing product ever.
This number is the app. It does not fold in Search AI Mode or every other Gemini surface Google has bolted onto its empire. That matters. Google already has AI Mode past a billion users on its own. Today’s trophy is the chatbot product people open on purpose.
How people are using it
Google’s usage stats are the part that should worry competitors more than the headline MAU:
- 63% of Gemini users talk to the assistant by voice
- More than 150 million images generated per day
- More than 100 million active users on iOS
Voice-first behavior plus Android distribution is a different growth machine than a desktop-first chat tab. Gemini 3.5 Flash is also in the mix, pitched for coding and autonomous agent tasks — Google’s bid to keep the app sticky after the novelty of “ask anything” wears off.
The ChatGPT comparison nobody can dodge
ChatGPT hit 1 billion monthly users earlier. External data pointed to June. OpenAI’s own language showed up later, buried in an August 6 blog post about how people use AI. Per The Verge, OpenAI’s Lindsay McCallum said ChatGPT crossed 1 billion monthly users some time ago and hit a billion interactions a week in July — then declined to give a current monthly figure.
Read that carefully. OpenAI still looks larger. Google looks faster. ChatGPT’s growth from 900 million weekly actives in February to the billion-user club months later was already a slowdown from the “fastest software ever” era. Gemini, meanwhile, went from 750 million monthly users in February to 950 million on the late-July earnings call to 1 billion last week, per Google’s spokesperson to The Verge.
Same finish line. Different posture. One company whispered. The other put it on the CEO’s X account.
Distribution just ate the chatbot moat
For years, “AI chatbot” meant ChatGPT the way “search” meant Google. That brand monopoly is cracking. When two products sit at a billion monthly users, distribution, defaults, and habit decide the next inning — not who shipped the first viral demo.
Google’s advantage is structural: Android preinstalls, Search adjacency, Workspace, and a Pixel event runway. OpenAI’s advantage is still mindshare and, for many power users, product feel. Neither advantage is permanent. Builders should stop treating one chatbot API as destiny. Buyers should notice that voice and image volume are becoming the real engagement metrics, not just “did you open the app this month.”
Google converted defaults into MAU
This is not Google catching up on vibes. It is Google converting distribution into MAU the way only Google can. Calling the Gemini app “fastest-growing” while carving Search AI Mode out of the count is clever measurement — and still a real milestone. ChatGPT remains the better-known brand. Its once-commanding lead does not.
The race to a billion users is over. The next race is uglier: retention, paid conversion, and giving a billion people a reason to come back after the first month of magic. Models will keep leapfrogging. Defaults will decide who compounds.
