Reddit sets RSS retirement and public API migration deadlines

Reddit will retire RSS on November 13 and end remaining public API access in March 2027. Its Devvit migration path leaves important gaps for readers and bots.

Reddit will stop supporting RSS feeds on November 13, 2026, removing a familiar way to follow communities through an external feed reader. Its September 30 announcement points moderators toward replacement alert tools, but says there is no replacement for RSS feeds outside a community the reader moderates.

A separate September 30 developer announcement sets March 2027 as the endpoint for remaining public Data API access. Existing apps and bots are being directed to Devvit, Reddit’s Developer Platform. The changes give readers and developers different deadlines and very different migration options.

RSS readers lose an access route

In its official infrastructure update, Reddit attributes the RSS retirement to large scale scraping and automated abuse. The consequence for ordinary readers is straightforward. The supported migration path focuses on moderation work, so someone using RSS to follow other communities cannot assume the suggested tools will preserve that experience.

The API transition has several deadlines

The developer timeline sets October 31, 2026 as the cutoff for new public API access requests. Registration for migration bounty funding closes November 30. Starting January 12, 2027, Reddit will begin removing API access from apps and users that have not registered or responded to its outreach.

Remaining public access is scheduled to close in March 2027. Reddit gives a month, not a specific shutdown day. Registering starts a migration conversation and provides a way to identify blockers. It should not be read as a promise that the old interface will remain available indefinitely.

Moderator alerts have a narrower replacement

Reddit’s mod alert guide recommends Discord Relay for sending moderation notifications to a team’s Discord or Slack channel. These messages link back to items on Reddit for review. The setup requires full moderator permissions for the community and permission to connect the destination channel.

The guide tells teams to use a private channel because alerts may include report details or moderation messages. Its initial configuration covers the moderation queue. The app checks that queue once a minute, so teams should allow a couple of minutes for a test alert and confirm that its link opens the correct item.

Each community and each alert type needs checking before the old RSS setup is retired. This preserves a defined moderation workflow. It does not provide a general feed reader replacement for people browsing communities they do not manage.

Moving a bot involves more than changing credentials

The official PRAW migration guide describes a different execution model. PRAW is a Python library commonly used to build Reddit integrations. A script running continuously on a developer’s server becomes an installed Devvit app with short lived event handlers and scheduled work.

The guide maps continuous streams to event triggers, recurring loops to scheduler jobs and local persistent files to Reddit hosted storage. Network calls must use permitted external domains. Installations are scoped to communities, which changes how a single bot serving many communities must be designed.

Some capabilities have no direct equivalent. Reddit lists private user information such as saved posts, upvoted posts and friends as unavailable through this migration path. That matters for developers assessing whether an existing utility can retain its behavior. A successful code conversion alone does not establish feature parity.

Some migration gaps require Reddit’s involvement

Reddit’s migration overview acknowledges that existing apps may need capabilities that are not a direct fit in Devvit. It describes routes for requesting broader external domain access and external endpoints for jobs or workflows spanning multiple communities.

The same page identifies app mention triggers as a beta feature available by request and describes separately requested blob storage access. These options make it important to inventory dependencies early. An app that needs an existing backend or shared state should check the relevant access path before assuming its migration is routine.

AI assistance still leaves a testing obligation

Reddit also maintains a guide to migration with an AI coding assistant. It calls for examining the original app before editing, making a reviewable plan and migrating one behavior at a time. Developers remain responsible for reviewing and testing the result.

The guide recommends preserving the original Python app, tracking unsupported behavior and testing failure paths as well as normal operation. Manual playtesting should cover real posts, comments, moderator actions and scheduled jobs. For a community that depends on an automation, the useful completion test is whether its actual workflow survives the move.
