Grok joins XChat groups with a message access tradeoff

XChat’s October 1 announcement brings Grok answers directly into group conversations.

Listen to this article

Grok is moving into XChat group conversations. The official XChat account announced on October 1 that people can ask the assistant for answers inside a group chat, bringing an AI response into the same thread as the discussion.

The announcement establishes an official product offering. It does not give a complete rollout schedule by region or device, and ByteForward has not verified access across accounts. The practical question for a group is what changes when the assistant joins.

Who can add Grok

According to X’s Chat documentation, Premium Plus users can add Grok as a conversation member. X and SpaceXAI then gain access to every message sent from the time Grok joins until it is removed.

That scope extends beyond messages addressed to the assistant. X also says its description of encrypted conversation content does not apply while Grok is in the chat. Removal ends the documented access interval. It does not establish deletion of anything already shared.

The documentation distinguishes this from selecting a message or image and using Ask Grok. The selected material is no longer covered by the conversation’s encryption when shared with Grok. The original conversation remains encrypted.

Agree on the boundary before inviting it

X’s Grok guidance advises against sharing sensitive or confidential information about yourself or other people. It also warns that answers can be wrong or miss context. These are the company’s stated cautions, and ByteForward has not independently audited this integration.

For a group deciding whether to use the feature, the sensible step is to agree on what belongs in the conversation first. A shared discussion can contain information from people who did not choose to invite the assistant. Treat adding it as a group decision, especially before discussing client work or personal matters. This is a recommendation, not a claim that X requires every member’s approval.

For readers following the wider product lineup, ByteForward’s coverage of Grok Bot’s Primary Bot setup and proactive suggestions concerns a separate assistant workflow. This XChat announcement is about getting answers within a conversation, rather than a new underlying model release.
