Google introduces Gemini agent with key features in early access

Google introduced the Gemini agent on October 8, 2026, pitching one workplace assistant for research, documents, media creation and coding. The announcement concerns software that completes tasks using underlying models.
Google says the agent can keep working in the cloud after a user logs off, retain context across devices and delegate work to other agents. It also describes use directly within Workspace applications, including Gmail, Docs and Sheets.
Key features remain in early access
The current product page adds an important qualification. Background task delegation, mobile and desktop access, and the choice of models from other providers are in early access. Google says broader availability is coming soon, without giving a date.
Google offers a 30 day trial of Gemini Enterprise Plus or a route through its sales team. The page does not list a price for the announced agent. Trial access should not be read as confirmation that every advertised capability is available.
The keynote announcement separately identifies financial services and legal specializations as previews. Government, healthcare and retail versions are described as coming later.
A separate October 8 announcement identifies sportswear company On as a tester of the new agent. It also says On had rolled out Gemini Enterprise to every employee.
Permissions and costs need practical checks
Googleโs product guidance says access follows existing user permissions and that project budget caps can pause an agent. These are vendor descriptions of the controls, rather than independent tests of their effectiveness.
For buyers, the useful next step is to test one defined workflow against the access actually enabled in their account. Check who can inspect the work, what requires human approval and what happens when a task stops. A successful demonstration should include those recovery steps as well as the finished output.
