AMD starts sampling enhanced space packaging for Versal AI Core
Early access samples reach customers while Class Y qualification remains underway

AMD announced on October 1 that early access customers are sampling its Versal AI Core XQRVC1902 in enhanced packaging for space missions. Class Y qualification is still underway, with flight qualified units expected in the second half of 2027.
What customers can evaluate
The lidless package uses an enhanced organic substrate and components intended to withstand thermal and mechanical stress. AMD targets missions lasting up to 15 years. That is a design goal, rather than a demonstrated operating lifetime.
AMD says the package is pin compatible with existing VC1902 devices using a 2197 ball grid array. The samples let customers build engineering models while qualification work continues.
Where AI fits
The existing AI Core architecture includes programmable signal processing engines for machine learning, convolutional neural networks and image processing. These sit alongside Arm processors and programmable logic.
An earlier roadmap reaches sampling
AMD outlined the packaging plan in November 2025, when samples were expected during 2026. The October update confirms that sampling has begun and narrows the expected flight unit schedule to the second half of 2027.
For mission teams, the next useful evidence is qualification for the exact device and package they plan to use. Sampling alone does not settle that requirement.
