Alibaba opens Wan 3.0 video generation to public beta testers

While the rest of the week argued about coding agents, Alibaba opened a public beta for Wan 3.0. The product page is selling longer clips, more reference assets, and a free-quota on-ramp that turns into a per-second bill.

Coding agents ate the timeline. Alibaba still shipped a video model. Wan 3.0 is in public beta on wan.video, with Alibaba Cloud Model Studio and Qwen Cloud as the metered doors behind the pretty landing page.

What the product page is selling

Wan’s current pitch is production control, not a one-prompt clip. The site lists generation with up to 20 reference assets, native 30-second duration, instruction-based and reference-based editing, portrait customization, long-form text in 12 languages, and sequential storytelling up to 12 images. That is a suite aimed at people who already make video, not at people who want one viral demo.

Free is a quota, not a plan

You can try Wan 3.0 without a credit card. You cannot live there. New Alibaba Cloud Model Studio users get a limited free quota — about 30 seconds on the Chinese region in the current public guidance. Qwen Cloud also hands new users a time-boxed free bucket, usually good for 90 days. After that the published API rates are $0.05/sec at 480p, $0.10/sec at 720p, and $0.20/sec at 1080p. Confirm the live meter before you budget a campaign around it.

The race this actually enters

Wan is not launching into empty space. Google Veo, OpenAI Sora, Kling, and Seedance are already in the same “can this replace a junior editor” fight. Wan’s advantage has been breadth: text-to-video, image-to-video, and editing in one family. Version 3.0 is the bid to keep that stack from looking last-generation while everyone else chases longer, cleaner clips.

Analysis: a public beta with a 30-second free taste is how you get creators to generate evidence for you. The question is not whether Wan can make a pretty five-second loop. It is whether 30-second native clips and fat reference stacks survive real brand work once the quota ends. Watch price, consistency on faces, and whether the edit tools are faster than doing the same job in Veo or Kling.
