Anthropic sets November 12 date for new Claude usage rules

Listen to this article

Anthropic announced its annual Usage Policy update on October 8, with the revised rules taking effect on November 12.

New hardware requirements call for a qualified operator who can observe and stop autonomous equipment capable of causing injury. The equipment must maintain a safe state if Claude disconnects.

Another new rule addresses extreme, sustained cruelty toward models without a discernible purpose. Anthropic excludes ordinary frustration, criticism, creative themes, testing and research. Ending conversations remains the primary enforcement mechanism.

The update removes a blanket ban on personalized vote and campaign targeting while retaining restrictions on deception and misuse of personal data. Anthropic says most other changes clarify existing rules.
