Databricks announces Workday federation beta for Genie queries

The connector gives Genie access to approved Workday data through Unity Catalog, with queries running on Databricks compute.

Listen to this article

Databricks announced a public beta of its Workday Data Connect federation connector on October 8. The connector makes approved HR and finance tables discoverable through Unity Catalog for analysis with Genie and other Databricks tools. Databricks announcement

Databricks reads shared Iceberg tables from Workday managed storage and runs queries on its own compute. Access is read only. The connector does not ingest those source tables into Databricks, although the setup stores catalog metadata. Databricks documentation

Once permissions are granted, Genie can answer natural language questions using Workday data alongside other governed business data. Databricks gives examples involving headcount growth, workforce changes and operating expenses. Databricks announcement

The beta requires a Unity Catalog enabled workspace. Current documentation specifies Databricks Runtime 19.8 or later and standard access mode. Dedicated access mode is unsupported. An administrator must enable the connector through the Previews page, and Workday must share the relevant tables. Databricks documentation

Teams that need a stored copy for historical reporting have separate Lakeflow Connect ingestion options. The October 8 announcement establishes the public beta announcement date. It does not establish when the first customer gained access. Databricks announcement
