Ohio requires human review for certain Medicaid AI decisions
A new Ohio rule requires employee checks on automated findings within specified Medicaid functions.

Ohio’s new Medicaid human review requirement took effect on October 6. When the department uses automated review tools to carry out sections 5162.17 through 5162.19 of the Revised Code, it must have a person review the resulting decision before taking action.
A defined review obligation
The responsible department employee must check the tool’s findings and confirm that its determination is correct. The law covers AI, automated fraud detection, algorithmic analysis and other electronic automated review tools.
One of the covered provisions, section 5162.17, requires a statewide dashboard for electronic visit verification. It includes claim matching and provider compliance data, with aggregate information made public.
The requirement is tied to those specified departmental functions. The text does not establish a general ban on AI in healthcare or a requirement covering every medical decision.
The statute requires a review step but offers no evidence of implementation quality.
