Shopify Canvas brings Sidekick into full store design

Shopify adds a visual store workspace with important compatibility and publishing limits

Listen to this article

Shopify announced Canvas on October 1, giving merchants a visual workspace for designing an entire online store with Sidekick. The company said access would expand over the following days, while the existing theme editor remains available.

Pages appear together in an interactive view that merchants can pan across and zoom into. Shopify says Sidekick edits theme files, validates the code and inspects screenshots as it refines a design. Merchants can also change elements directly and preview different products and screen sizes.

Compatibility comes before the redesign

The current requirements guide describes early access for selected stores on desktop devices. A plan must include theme customization, and staff need the Edit code permission. Shopify themes and custom themes are supported. Themes from third party developers are not.

Canvas cannot configure app blocks or app embeds, or customize themes for different markets. Themes edited there receive no theme updates, and their files cannot be downloaded.

The launch changelog lists translations and rollouts among the gaps. The Help Center gives a more specific picture. Theme content can be translated through Translate & Adapt using Default theme content. A Canvas theme can replace the main theme in a rollout, but must be edited in Canvas.

Saving and publishing are separate

Shopifyโ€™s editing guide says merchants can start a new theme or duplicate a supported one. The duplicate is edited only in Canvas. Its original stays in the existing editor, and changes do not transfer between them.

Edits save automatically but stay out of the customer view until published. For an already published theme, merchants select Update and then confirm Publish changes. The saved Canvas view can therefore differ from the live store.

Reversing an agent edit also needs attention. Sidekick changes clear the manual undo history, including earlier manual edits. To reverse one, ask Sidekick to change it back or restore a version from theme history. Restoring a version still requires publication before customers see it.

A useful trial needs a recovery test

Our reading is that a merchant should judge a design tool by the work needed to launch and maintain the result. Before choosing a new layout, list the store functions the business cannot lose and decide who will check each one. A compelling preview is only one part of that decision.

For a first trial, use a copy and a small design brief. Check a complete shopping journey, narrow screens and any essential integrations. Deliberately reverse a change before committing to the workflow. Record which version the team intends to publish so a second person can review the same result.
