DoorDash adds AI planning tools for delivery workers

DoorDash is rolling out AI recommendations in the Dasher app and testing DashBuddy Voice Mode. Its earlier text assistant remains focused on general guidance.

DoorDash is rolling out new AI tools inside the Dasher app to help delivery workers plan when and where to work. In a September 30 update, the company also said it is testing a voice version of DashBuddy, its assistant for people getting started on the platform.

The announcement describes personalized recommendations that respond to questions about a future shift. A worker could ask about Friday and receive a suggested time and area based on their circumstances. DoorDash says these app features are rolling out across the United States.

DashBuddy already had a text service

The text assistant predates this announcement. DoorDash published its DashBuddy guide in April, describing SMS answers about scheduling, pay and getting ready for a first delivery. The September update says DashBuddy is live in the United States and Canada, while Voice Mode remains a test.

DoorDash reports that more than 200,000 Dashers had used the assistant by September. It says DashBuddy resolved about 95 percent of questions from people signing up or preparing for their first delivery, based on internal data from July through September.

That measure concerns onboarding questions. It does not establish how much more a worker earns, how often scheduling advice is accurate or how well the assistant resolves a complicated problem during an active delivery.

Guidance has a different role from account support

The earlier guide makes clear that the SMS assistant provides general information. Workers still complete actions in the Dasher app themselves. DashBuddy may not retain conversations across sessions, and account specific problems such as a missing payment belong with live support.

DoorDash also tells users to rely on its verified sender and use the text service before or between deliveries, rather than while driving. Those are useful boundaries for the existing SMS service. The announcement does not establish that every limit is identical in the experimental voice mode or the new app features.

The practical value of the rollout will depend on whether the advice helps workers make better decisions with less searching. Availability and onboarding response rates provide an early picture, but they are only part of that test.
