Grok API watermarking: what to check before November 7

SpaceXSI’s Grok documentation, updated October 31, schedules default text watermarking for November 7. This is a planned API change, not a verified rollout today.
Scope and verification
Named models are Grok 4.7, 4.6, 4.5, 4.3, and the three 4.20 variants: reasoning, non-reasoning and multi-agent. Coverage includes structured output and tool arguments on global and regional endpoints.
The watermark shapes token selection without adding hidden characters or markup. On Responses or Chat Completions, x-watermark: true confirms application to that response. Separate statistical detection can be uncertain and requires access approval.
Team administrators control each model across all team keys. Some models may be locked. Opting out requires a legal-exception acknowledgment; the setting is not a compliance guarantee.
Keep provenance and validation separate
The structured-output guide describes schema-constrained JSON and tool arguments. Supported constraints are enforced, but some keywords are best-effort and need application validation. A record can therefore have a known generation origin while still requiring ordinary correctness checks.
For an invoice workflow, record the observed response metadata alongside the parsed result, then check totals and required business fields independently. Provenance is one piece of evidence, not permission to execute a suggested action or accept a factual answer.
| Integration check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Confirm the SDK exposes response headers | A wrapper may return only parsed content. |
| Retain model and request identifiers | Make later investigation reproducible. |
| Run representative JSON and tool-call cases | Check the application’s existing validators and approval boundaries. |
We have not tested the rollout, detection accuracy or performance. Review the current vendor documentation before changing a production integration, especially when multiple applications share one team.
