Barclays expands Claude with a developer rollout target

Barclays plans wider Claude adoption across development and operations

Listen to this article

Barclays expects half its developers to use Claude Code by the end of 2026 and a majority in 2027. Its expanded collaboration with Anthropic, announced October 1, covers software development, legacy modernization and bank operations.

The systems already in use

Anthropic says an internal knowledge assistant, live since 2025, has more than 16,000 users and over one million searches. A separate Global Markets system classifies and routes about 120,000 incoming emails daily. The bank applies security controls, governance and human oversight.

The figures track different things. Searches show demand for information, emails show processing volume, and the coding target describes future adoption. None directly measures work quality.

Why retrieval matters for customer support

The knowledge assistant uses retrieval augmented generation. Anthropic’s technical explanation of retrieval describes a process that finds relevant material in a knowledge base and includes it with a model’s prompt. That gives an answer access to business information beyond the model’s training. The engineering article also explains a weakness of ordinary retrieval systems. Splitting documents into short passages can remove context needed to understand or locate the correct information.

For a bank, that makes the quality of the underlying information and the handling of exceptions important questions. A useful evaluation would check whether an employee received the right policy for the right product and whether outdated material could influence the answer. The retrieval architecture alone cannot answer those questions.

The next test is measurable performance

No independently audited savings or error rate is disclosed.

The next useful evidence would pair adoption with outcomes. For software teams, that could mean time to complete reviewed changes and the rate of defects after deployment. For service teams, it could mean answer accuracy and time to resolve a customer inquiry. Those measures would make the expansion easier to judge than usage totals alone.
