OpenAI acquires NextSlide as it expands ChatGPTโs presentation tools

OpenAI just absorbed another workflow product into ChatGPT. Not a model. Not a research lab. A slides company.
According to TechCrunch, NextSlide has announced it is joining OpenAI, and the team’s members are now working on ChatGPT. Financial terms were not disclosed.
What NextSlide actually built
Founder Ahmed Beshry’s note on the NextSlide site describes a product that turns prompts, notes, documents, or research into a polished, editable presentation. The pitch was accessibility: make visual communication easier, help more people get ideas across clearly. By joining OpenAI, Beshry said the team will keep chasing that same mission inside ChatGPT.
Beshry is not a first-time founder. He co-founded Caper AI, the smart-cart / cashier-less checkout startup Instacart acquired in 2021. That pedigree matters less as biography and more as signal: OpenAI is buying operators who already shipped a consumer product through an exit, then putting them on the ChatGPT surface.
The announce arrived months late
On LinkedIn, Beshry said the announcement is coming “a few months late,” and that the acquisition took place earlier this year. So the press cycle is catching up to a deal that already closed. Readers who treat every OpenAI headline as a live product ship will misread this one. The buy happened. The public packaging happened later.
That lag is the story as much as the product. OpenAI has been stacking capabilities into ChatGPT without always staging the acquisition as a launch event. NextSlide fits that pattern: talent and IP land first, narrative second.
Why decks inside ChatGPT matter
Presentation software is not a novelty bet. It is the default output format for work that needs a room of people to agree. If ChatGPT can take a messy brief (notes, a doc, a research dump) and hand back an editable deck, that pulls another high-frequency office task into the chat window.
The competitive stake is simple. Google has Gemini across Docs, Slides, and the rest of Workspace. Microsoft has Copilot inside PowerPoint. OpenAI’s counter is ChatGPT as the hub. Buying NextSlide is how you staff that counter without waiting for an internal slides team to invent itself from scratch.
Builders and buyers should treat this as product-line expansion, not model news. The weights did not change. The surface area of what ChatGPT claims to finish for you did.
Talent first, feature later
This is OpenAI shopping for unfinished work products, not for flashy demos. Slides are sticky because they sit at the end of research, writing, and persuasion. Fold that into ChatGPT and you deepen the habit loop: stay in the chat, leave with the artifact your meeting needs.
The late announce also reads as confidence, or at least as indifference to the acquisition ticker. OpenAI did not need a victory-lap press day for NextSlide. It needed the team on ChatGPT. The website note and LinkedIn post are cleanup after the fact.
One caveat, labeled as such: without disclosed terms or a public ship date for NextSlide features inside ChatGPT, we cannot score the deal on price or on how fast users will see it. What we can say is the direction. ChatGPT keeps eating adjacent productivity surfaces.
When decks show up inside ChatGPT
Watch for NextSlide-shaped features shipping inside ChatGPT (prompt- or doc-to-deck, editable slides in-thread) and any OpenAI product post that names the team. Until that lands, treat the acquisition as talent and roadmap, not as a feature you can click today.
