ChatGPT API credits: who qualifies and when they expire

Listen to this article

OpenAI added an API-credit benefit to its October 28 release notes for eligible ChatGPT Pro and Business subscribers. It is a separate offer from the October 29 Work and Codex allowance increase: claiming an API grant does not make those subscription meters larger.

The useful question is not simply whether your plan includes credits. It is which API organization receives them, how much of the current billing period remains, and what happens when the promotional balance runs out. Those details determine whether the benefit fits a project you actually intend to run.

How much API credit does each plan include?

Eligible subscriptionFull monthly allowance
Pro 100$100
Pro 200$200
Pro 500$500
Business Standard$20 per paid seat
Business Premium$100 per paid seat
USD amounts from OpenAI’s developer guide. Business contributions share a $500 monthly workspace cap.

The developer guide says the first grant is prorated and unused credits expire at the billing-cycle boundary. Annually prepaid Business workspaces receive an upfront annual grant rather than monthly deposits. The benefit requires a paid subscription at least seven days old, ownership of both sides of the link, and matching account email addresses.

Hypothetical example: four Standard seats and two Premium seats produce a full-period allowance of $280: (4 × $20) + (2 × $100). That is arithmetic, not an observed grant. Claiming partway through a cycle can produce a smaller amount, so use the amount and expiry displayed during activation rather than treating the table as an immediate balance.

Check the receiving organization before claiming

OpenAI’s benefit guide limits each eligible subscription or workspace to one linked API organization, with one active link per organization. A Business admin role alone does not qualify: the person activating must own the workspace and receiving organization and have billing-management permission. Plus, trials, Enterprise and Edu are not eligible under this offer.

Activation starts in ChatGPT billing or API Platform billing. Review the receiving organization before confirming, then inspect its credit grants. Linking accounts and receiving a grant are separate outcomes. Availability can depend on country and enabled cohort. Being on an eligible plan does not establish that credits have arrived. Annual Business grants have a $6,000 cap.

What the credits cover, and where they stop

Supported API charges include Responses, Agents, Images, voice APIs and applicable tools or storage. Codex usage through API keys is excluded. No API payment method is required to use an active promotional grant, but rate and model limits still apply.

ChatGPT and API billing remain separate. The API organization’s balance is not a personal ChatGPT credit balance or a Business workspace credit pool. A teammate’s ChatGPT seat also does not automatically provide API project access. For troubleshooting, identify the product and organization first rather than assuming one subscription dashboard describes every balance.

Promotional credits are used before purchased API credits. If paid credits remain afterward, API calls can continue consuming them. With no credits left, requests fail with HTTP 429 and credit_balance_exhausted. Automatic recharge is a separate paid setting, not a condition for claiming the free grant.

A benefit to verify, not a cash rebate

OpenAI’s service-credit terms describe credits as non-transferable service balances, not cash. The offer can change or end, so this is not a promise of permanent subscription savings.

Before building around it, record the actual grant, its expiration and which project will use it. Keep API spending checks separate from Work and Codex usage checks. ByteForward has not activated this offer or tested billing behavior for this article.
