Gemini adds in-chat file editing, including PDFs on mobile

Listen to this article

Google announced in-chat file generation, previews and editing on October 29. PDFs work on the web and mobile. The other announced formats are web-only. Google says the capabilities are available to all users in languages where the Gemini app is offered.

The announcement describes expanding a file to full screen for direct edits, selecting text to ask questions, and asking Gemini to refine the file. Its demonstration turns handwritten lecture notes into a PDF study guide. That is a vendor example, not a ByteForward test.

Google’s official file-editing demonstration.

A practical way to check the workflow

For an illustrative trial, start with a short set of notes you are permitted to upload. Ask for a study guide with separate headings for definitions, worked examples and unanswered questions. Select one ambiguous paragraph and ask for clarification without changing the rest. Then review the result against the original notes. Do not assume a polished layout means every statement is correct.

A useful comparison is whether a targeted edit leaves surrounding content intact. Check names, numbers, equations and page breaks after each revision. Keep an original copy so that an accidental rewrite is easy to spot. These are suggested checks, not measured capabilities or a claim that every document will retain its formatting.

Existing upload limits still matter

Google’s upload help requires sign-in and permits up to ten files in a prompt, subject to availability. Supported non-video files can be up to 100 MB each. These are input limits, not promises about the size of a generated output. Work or school accounts need administrator-enabled app access to import from Drive.

The same guide warns that large uploads can cause Gemini to miss details or connections. Rolling upload and analysis limits also apply. The new editing announcement does not remove those constraints. A smaller source document can make it easier to inspect whether a requested change was applied accurately.

How this relates to Canvas

Google’s existing Canvas documentation already describes direct text edits, prompt-based revisions and automatic saving. It also provides previous and next version controls. Those background features should not be presented as entirely new on October 29.

That guide documents exporting text to Google Docs and slides to Google Slides or PDF. It says shared Canvas links open on the web, not in the mobile app. This is a separate sharing limitation, not a contradiction of the new PDF editing support.

The distinction is useful when choosing a workflow. Creating a file, editing it inside a chat, exporting it and sharing an editable link are separate steps. Confirm the path you need rather than inferring that every format has identical mobile, export and collaboration support. ByteForward reviewed the announcement and documentation but did not test the rollout.
