Vercel offers Ling 3.1 Flash free through October 13

Vercelโ€™s Ling 3.1 Flash promotion runs through October 13. The model entry you choose determines whether service stops or paid usage begins afterward.

Listen to this article

Vercel announced on September 30 that InclusionAIโ€™s Ling 3.1 Flash is available through AI Gateway, with free access through October 13, 2026. Developers evaluating the model have a choice that matters when the promotion ends.

Choose how the trial ends

The launch announcement lists a standard model entry and a separate free entry. The standard entry begins billing after the promotion. The free entry stops serving instead. The announcement does not state the eventual paid rate.

For a temporary experiment, the free entry gives a clearer stopping point. An application that needs to keep running will need a plan for paid usage or another model. Put that decision in the trial setup rather than leaving it to an unattended agent after the offer expires.

What the gateway currently serves

Vercelโ€™s current model documentation describes Ling 3.1 Flash as a hybrid reasoning language model for coding, analysis and agents that use tools. Its served context window is 262,144 tokens, with up to 32,768 output tokens. Reasoning tokens count toward that output limit. These are the gateway limits a developer can use when sizing requests.

The same documentation provides reasoning controls and tool calling examples. Requests can use the AI SDK or compatible Chat Completions, Responses and Messages formats. Vercel lists Novita AI as the provider. A common API format can reduce integration work, but applications still need to check how their chosen parameters behave.

OpenRouter also lists Ling 3.1 Flash through Novita with free token pricing and the same context and output limits. Its route supports function calling but does not enforce JSON through the response format parameter. The October 2 date on that catalog entry should not be read as the modelโ€™s original launch date, given Vercelโ€™s earlier announcement.

A useful trial needs an exit test

For an agent workflow, test tool selection, argument handling and recovery from a failed request on representative tasks. Record useful completed work alongside token use. A trial that looks inexpensive can still create maintenance work if the application depends on an endpoint that later stops responding.

ByteForwardโ€™s coverage of the Pareto preview explores another model access decision where pricing, version selection and retention terms need separate attention. For Ling, the immediate choice is whether the experiment should stop automatically or continue into paid use.
