Claude brings direct editing to Google Docs Sheets and Slides

Anthropic announced Claude for Google Workspace on October 6, bringing a sidebar to Docs, Sheets and Slides in public beta for paid Claude plans. Separate connectors let people create and edit Google files from Claude itself.
Two ways to work on a file
The sidebar works beside the open document. Anthropic says it can revise text, write spreadsheet formulas, build pivot tables and create slides using a deck’s existing layouts. It asks before edits by default, with an alternative mode that applies ordinary content changes without repeated approval.
The sidebar documentation sets narrower boundaries. It can work on the file in which it is opened, supplemented by any enabled connectors. It cannot independently open or create other Drive files, share the document or transfer ownership. Links, external images and removing access still require approval.
Google records its edits under the user’s name in version history. The sidebar must remain open during work, and Firefox is unsupported in this beta.
The separate Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors can create files and work across files the connected Google account can access. The live editing pane works in Chrome on Claude’s website or in Claude Desktop with its browser enabled. Team and Enterprise owners must enable the connectors before members connect.
Start with the file you need
For the sidebar route, install Claude from the Google Workspace Marketplace, open a file and choose Claude from its Extensions menu. Anthropic’s announcement says administrators can deploy it across a domain or selected groups. A paid Claude account alone does not determine whether a workplace permits the installation.
For the connector route, turn on the relevant Docs, Sheets or Slides connector and paste a file link or explicitly request a Google file. The connector guide says a generic request for a document can instead produce a downloadable local file. The editing pane also needs a Google session matching the connected account. If the pane is unavailable, the file card offers an option to open the file directly in Google.
People can continue editing while Claude works through the connector. Anthropic says it reads the current content before each change, but recommends checking the result in a busy file. That makes a small shared document a useful starting point for evaluating the workflow before applying it to a larger team process.
Check limits before a rollout
The connector documentation says Slides charts cannot currently be added through that route. In the sidebar, generated Slides charts are images and do not update when spreadsheet values change. Picking an entry point therefore affects what the finished file can do.
Organizations also need to check retention requirements. The sidebar documentation says custom retention settings do not carry over, and Zero Data Retention is unavailable. Access to familiar files does not make every enterprise deployment requirement transferable.
