Gemini Notebook adds free textbooks, with a text-only limit

Listen to this article

Google has added hundreds of free textbooks to Gemini Notebook’s built-in source catalog. The October 29 announcement names OpenStax, Open Textbook Library and S Chand Publishing among providers in the US and India. Students can use selected books for source-linked answers, study guides, quizzes and flashcards.

The useful change is the route into the material: choosing a book inside Notebook instead of finding and uploading a separate file. It is not an offer to make every commercial textbook free. There is also an important reading limit: Google’s source documentation says textbook imports support text only.

How to find the textbook catalog

On a computer, open a notebook and choose Add sources → Textbooks. Browse the available catalog, then compare the title and edition with your syllabus before building study notes around it. The publisher’s name alone does not establish that a particular course book is included.

Source routeWhat to check
Built-in textbook catalogThe new free selection, not every book from each publisher.
Purchased Play Books ebooksA separate import route for eligible purchases on the same Google account. Unavailable titles appear gray.
Textbook importsText only. Keep the original book available for visual material.
Source selectionSelect the relevant book in Sources to keep unrelated material out of the question.

Google’s source guide documents the import and selection behavior. It also warns that changing sources does not change Studio outputs already generated. After adjusting the reading material, regenerate study aids rather than assuming an older quiz now reflects the new selection.

A study prompt worth trying

After choosing a chapter, try this suggested prompt. This is an editorial example, not a tested output:

Explain this chapter’s core concept, identify the supporting passages, and make five practice questions without showing the answers first.

Answer the questions yourself, then check the cited passages before accepting corrections. A citation is a route back to evidence, not proof that every explanation is right. For a biology diagram, geometry figure or chart, return to the original page; the text-only import is not a reason to assume those visual details were understood.

If the option is missing

Google’s general availability guide describes supported regions and account age requirements, but the announcement does not provide a complete textbook-specific eligibility table. US and India identify providers, not a stated two-country audience restriction. For a work or school account that cannot access Notebook, Google’s access FAQ directs users to their Workspace administrator.
