OpenAI to test visual ads during ChatGPT image generation
A US test is planned for later October as OpenAI expands conversion tracking and brand suitability work.

OpenAI announced a visual advertising format on October 5 that it plans to test during image generation in ChatGPT. The US test starts later this month with a selected group of advertisers.
OpenAI says the ads will be labeled and kept separate from the generated image. The company says advertising does not affect ChatGPTโs answers.
More ways to track campaign results
The accompanying measurement update expands conversion and attribution partnerships. Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp integrations help advertisers send conversion events from existing systems. Pixel and Conversions API signals can cover purchases, leads, installs and sign ups.
Advertisers can also choose a reporting window for clicks and include a one day window for conversions following an ad view. OpenAI says these reporting settings do not change campaign optimization. It is exploring geographic experiments with Haus, Measured and WorkMagic to assess whether campaigns generate additional business.
Placement controls are still developing
Negative Phrases are available to qualifying advertisers with specific placement restrictions. OpenAI is developing evaluation pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science. It says those partners will test brand suitability in a controlled environment without access to private user conversations.
For a business considering a test, the practical questions are placement access, the conversion events it will share and how it will measure additional sales. A purchase attributed to an ad is not, by itself, proof the ad caused it. ByteForward has not tested the format or independently verified the advertising safeguards.
