Microsoftโ€™s UserRepGen 4B prepares inputs for user simulation

Listen to this article

Microsoftโ€™s public repository hosts UserRepGen 4B, generating inferred task and behavior descriptions in JSON from conversations for a separate user simulator.

What researchers can download

The file listing includes roughly 9.1 GB of weights and an example script. The card lists MIT terms. Included Qwen assets retain Apache 2.0.

The underlying Qwen 3.5 4B model has a four billion parameter language component and a vision encoder. Qwen publishes its weights and configuration in Transformers format and documents serving with vLLM and SGLang. Its own card describes a native context window of 262,144 tokens and includes separate language and visual evaluations. Those specifications describe the original Qwen release.

Microsoftโ€™s adaptation supports English text only, with 8,192 prompt tokens. Image and video use are unsupported. Use authorized conversations and review each assertion against its source before simulation.

For an integration, treat the specialized checkpoint as a separate dependency. A loader accepting a file is only the first check. Build a test fixture around the intended input format, then record failures, response length and memory use on the hardware that will actually run it. A download size alone is insufficient for capacity planning.

What the reported score measures

Microsoft reports a 4.95 out of 10 simulation fidelity score for one rollout per representation on 700 conversations, versus 3.41 for the base Qwen model, using GPT 5.4 mini as simulator, assistant and judge. ByteForward has not reproduced it.

That evaluates a chain of components. A useful replication would hold the simulator, assistant and judging prompts constant while changing the representation generator. Then repeat the comparison with a different judge and examples chosen for the intended application. Report the spread of results, rather than treating one average as a universal measure of how people behave.

Privacy remains part of the evaluation

Microsoft warns descriptions can help link a userโ€™s conversations and retain sensitive details or unsupported inferences. They are not anonymized. The paper link remains pending.

For a concrete transfer test, hold the behavior description constant and swap the task. Does the simulated user preserve the intended interaction pattern, or keep referring to the old problem? Record those carryovers separately from JSON errors and successful task completion. This makes it easier to distinguish a reusable description from a compressed copy of the original exchange.
